The University of Portland was founded in September 1901 by Portland Archbishop Alexander Christie, who had purchased property atop Waud’s Bluff with financial assistance from the Congregation of Holy Cross in South Bend, Indiana. Archbishop Christie named the school “Columbia University” after the mighty river that flowed nearby, and when it opened its doors, it was staffed with priests from the archdiocese. Columbia University achieved junior college status in 1922, and in 1925 the College of Arts and Sciences was founded. Four years later the first bachelor’s degrees were awarded to a class of seven men. In the 1930s, the University’s name was changed to the University of Portland, the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing became part of the University as the College of Nursing, and the School of Business were created. In 1948, the School of Engineering was created. The University established its Graduate School in 1950 and the School of Education in 1962. In 1967 the Congregation of Holy Cross and the University’s Board of Regents transitioned to a shared governance structure. Today, the University continues to be guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross and governed by an independent board of directors. The University of Portland is the only school in Oregon to offer a College of Arts & Sciences, a graduate school, and nationally accredited programs in the schools of business, education, engineering, and nursing. In 2013, University of Portland was named one of America's "Green Colleges"​ for the fourth consecutive year by The Princeton Review. At the College of Business at Pacific University, we are continually pushing boundaries in education – exploring new approaches to teaching, different kinds of content creation, and new models of active learning in our classrooms. As a smaller operation, we offer many more intimate opportunities for students to meet and thrive. Portland Opportunities Industrialization Center and Rosemary Anderson High School provides the highest quality services in education, mentoring, family outreach, employment training, and placement. Rosemary Anderson is an accredited alternative high school serving students who are looking for small classes, inspiring teachers, and more whole-life support as they work towards completing their high school diploma or GED. Each student receives individual support from our team of teachers and career training advocates, who works with students to find the best path forward in school and in career preparation. Once connected to our team, we continue to provide mentoring after graduation through the transition to college or career training, and stay with the student until the age of 25. Services include small classes, field trips, mentors, Sylvan tutors, counseling and social support services, employment and training programs, connections to internships, after school classes including yoga, art, drama and music, teen parent programs, and free breakfast and lunch. Hillsboro Aero Academy, is one of the largest airplane and helicopter training schools in the United States. Thousands of pilots have graduated from our accredited programs and go on to fly for companies all over the world. Learning to fly is an amazing experience, and we have the knowledge, courses and equipment to you get off the ground as soon as possible. Our students received individualized instruction in a one-on-one environment which allows us to customize the training for every student. We have been training pilots since 1980 and are an FAA-approved flight school. We are also accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) Hillsboro Aero Academy has partners with multiple college programs so students can receive a two and four-year college degree in conjunction with their flight training at Hillsboro Aero Academy. All of our aircraft are meticulously maintained and our instructors are highly experienced and dedicated to teaching you the skills you need to fly. Our school campuses located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest offer our students the chance to experience a wide range of weather conditions and challenging terrain to help prepare them for their future careers. These flying conditions give our students the opportunity to learn how to handle a variety of situations and become more skilled pilots.
