HISTORY 1945 - Moshe (Morris) Rosenfeld and son-in-law Arthur Waltuck start Standard Junk Company on Front Avenue in SW Portland. 1947 - Young son and grandson Leland Waltuck begins coming down to work on Saturdays at age 6. 1952 - The company name is changed to Standard Steel & Metal Company to reflect an emphasis on steel. 10/1/1989 - Leland Waltuck, like a "phoenix rising from the ashes", starts over, forming and opening a small operation called The Steel Yard. It slowly picks up speed, flourishes, and once again gains momentum, on rented property on Northeast Columbia Blvd. 1990's - The company continues to grow in Northeast Portland 2001-2004 - Another recession, but this one we survive, and keep on growing. 2001 - Leland's son-in-law Loren Koplan joins the business, and begins to learn. 2004-2013 - The Steel Yard becomes larger, stronger, and more versatile. 2005 - Named to the 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies in Oregon. 2006 - Is again named to the 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies in Oregon. 2009 - Named to the 100 Best Private Companies To Work For in Oregon. 2010 - Loren Koplan is made Corporate Vice President of The Steel Yard after a decade of learning almost every position at the company. 2011 - Named to the 100 Best Private Companies To Work For in Oregon. 2013 - A new yet familiar name is taken. After 24 years as The Steel Yard, we go back to our roots and take back the name "The Standard Steel Companies". 2013 - The Standard Steel Companies purchases 4+ acres of land on Northeast Columbia Blvd. We will be moving onto our new land in 2014. 2015 - New Location at 1745 NE Columbia Blvd, Portland OR being built in full force
