Scott Relyea is Director of Benefits Data Solutions at Mployer Advisor, where he leads the benchmarking and analytics work behind Mployer's benefits ratings. He reached the role from both sides of the table. He spent five years at Corporate Synergies, first as a junior underwriter and then as an account manager, served as Account Executive and Director of Underwriting at Opus Advisory Group, and advised employers directly as a benefits consultant at OneDigital. That combination is uncommon: he has priced the risk, placed the plan, and sat with the employer who has to live with the renewal. Scott holds a bachelor's degree in finance from Quinnipiac University and joined Mployer Advisor in 2024.

According to Mployer Insights’ 2026 analysis of 76,000+ employer benefit plans, disability insurance remains a major market differentiator, with only 41% of U.S. employers offering short-term disability (STD) and 38% offering long-term disability (LTD). While 60% salary replacement serves as the national standard across both benefit types, standard plan designs disproportionately expose higher earners due to median benefit caps of $1,602/week for STD and $8,273/month for LTD. Furthermore, alignment between STD benefit durations (median 26 weeks) and LTD elimination periods (68% at 90 days) remains a critical area for plan structure optimization.

How an employer funds its health plan sits quietly in the background of every benefits decision. Most CHROs and CFOs know their premium cost. Fewer understand the mechanics of how their plan is actually structured: who holds the risk, who administers the claims, how costs flow, and what flexibility, if any, they have to change any of it.

There are very few mechanisms in the U.S. benefits system that are truly triple tax-advantaged. The Health Savings Account is one of them. Contributions go in pre-tax, grow tax-free, and come out tax-free when used for qualified medical expenses

The H-1B visa program allows U.S. employers to hire highly skilled foreign workers, primarily in tech and finance. Despite Republican control of Congress, a divide has emerged over its future. Elon Musk and President Trump support the program, while many MAGA voters oppose it, arguing it suppresses U.S. wages. Demand for H-1B visas far exceeds supply, with most recipients from India and China. While expansion seems more likely than reduction, political pushback may shape future reforms. Employers should stay informed as policy changes unfold.
