Methodology

How We Evaluate Insurance Advisors: M Score

Our goal is to highlight highly experienced insurance advisors, enabling employers to select the best insurance advisor for their needs. Our algorithms evaluate two components.

1. Quantitative: Evaluating an individual brokerage offices employer experience across industries, size groups as well self-funding, pharmacy and other strategies.

2. Qualitative: Evaluating over 25K reviews of each brokerage office both on the overall rating as well as count of reviews. Service and positive outcomes equate to positive employer relationships and satisfied partners.

Why it works

How our “M Score” works

Balanced and transparent evaluation.

1  Our Rating Factors

Quantitative

We evaluate a brokerage’s employer experience across industries, sizes and products. The broader and deeper a brokerage's experience, the higher the rating.

Qualitative

We assess employer reviews of an insurance advisor – both the presence of reviews as well as the review detail – provided on Mployer as well as other common review platforms.

2. Scoring Inputs

Annual Filings

We utilize over 900K employer tax filings each year to identify employers, brokers and carrier relationships, length of relationships and range of benefits.

Direct Benefit Buyer Feedback

We utilize over 25,000 employer reviews of their insurance advisor on MployerAdvisor.com.

Employer Surveys

We survey thousands of employers each year across numerous metrics with our proprietary database expanding annually.

Private Claims Data

Through custom relationships, we access employer plan information to identify employer benefit plan detail and changes.

FAQ

Can a broker provide you data?
Yes, a brokerage can edit their profile to add information that we may not have available. That information will then be factored into the score, for example if a brokerage has experience in a certain sector but we do not have record of it, and it is added to the profile, the score will then be recalculated. Note, we reserve the right to audit any fields that are self reported. If the audit fails, your account will be suspended.
Do you just use public data sources?
No, we use numerous public and private data sources to drive the ranking and overall broker winners. The sources are shown above and cover both quantitative and qualitative aspects of each advisor.
How often are the awards and ratings refreshed?
Awards are announced each year in the summer and early fall. The data is updated throughout the year. Winners are based on the most recent data available as of the end of May each year. Some data sources updated monthly, some daily. To score each firm, we utilize the data as of the end of May.
Are large firms at an advantage?
The employers we evaluate consistently focuses on those with 50 and above lives though we do often and evaluate and work with smaller employers. Insurance brokerages and consultants that work with groups that are primarily 50+ lives will be rated higher on average than firms who primarily focus on employers with under 50 lives. Any brokerage may share their data with us to have their score and information updated.
