The Anoka County Community Action Program, Inc. (ACCAP) is an independent nonprofit agency, which began in 1965 under the Economic Opportunity Act. Every year, ACCAP serves thousands of residents in Anoka County, Minnesota through a wide range of programs. A volunteer Governing Board, made up of representatives of the public sector, private sector, and the low-income community, directs the activities of ACCAP. ACCAP is committed to helping disadvantaged individuals out of poverty and into the community as productive citizens. The agency offers educational opportunities, information and referral, and direct services, such as Head Start, Affordable Housing, and Child Care Resource & Referral. These programs and services help residents achieve their goal of self-sufficiency. The Community Action Program also works to educate the broader community and improve the general population’s attitude toward low-income and other disadvantaged persons. Anoka County residents can help their neighbors by volunteering at ACCAP in a variety of settings. ACCAP is funded by contracts with the federal government, the State of Minnesota, Anoka County local municipalities, foundations, the United Way, program fees, and donations. Private contributions remain in the community and are tax deductible.

Merrick, Inc., is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, licensed by the MN Department of Human Services to provide Day Training and Habilitation (DT&H), Supported Employment (SES), and Adult Day Services (ADS). We are dedicated to empowering adults with disabilities through pre-vocational, supported employment, and day habilitation services - guiding clients towards realizing their goals and dreams. From self-discovery assessments, person-centered planning, and self-advocacy experiences, clients at Merrick, Inc., are finding their place in the world through meaningful work, community engagement, valued relationships, and enhanced personal skills resulting in more self-determined lives.

Alexandra House was established in 1977, when a group of concerned citizens formed the Anoka County Task Force for Battered Women. Within a year the Task Force established a 24-hour crisis line, with the first emergency shelter opening in 1980. First located in Fridley, the original shelter housed 12 women and children. In 1983 the shelter moved to a new site in Blaine that provided space for 17 residents. By 1994, the second shelter was outgrown and the organization built its current facility in Blaine, which can house up to 35 women and children (including males to age 18) at a time. As the needs of the community evolved, so too has Alexandra House expanded on its services – adding legal advocacy, therapy and support services, violence prevention programs, abuse in later life resources, and community education and professional training. Alexandra House supports everyone who is affected by domestic and sexual violence and abuse in later life. We are a resource for victims and survivors of sexual violence in any form. We also offer support to friends and family of victim/survivors and other concerned persons. We provide 24-hour emergency shelter, support services and advocacy to victims of domestic and sexual violence. We are located in the cities of Blaine and Anoka, but serve victims of domestic and sexual violence across the state of Minnesota. The mission of Alexandra House is to empower victims of domestic and sexual violence, and inspire social change, through education, support and advocacy.

Anu Family Services has been providing innovative services since 1992. Anu Family Services is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that serves clients in Wisconsin and Minnesota. We are nationally accredited by the “gold standard” in child welfare accreditation —The Council on Accreditation (COA)—since our inception. Our service specialization started with treatment foster care and has expanded to service offerings that are designed to support families so that children can remain in the home, get home more quickly or be successful when they return home. Parent Coaching, Parent Coaching Certification, Youth Coaching, Community-Based Flexible Support, and Individualized Trauma Services (ITS) are a few of the innovative approaches designed by Anu Family Services. Anu Family Services also provides Parenting Coach Certification, training, and consultation. Anu was an early founder and innovator of the national/international treatment foster care model. Our former parent company was founded in 1972 by a small group of foster parents who believed professional, highly trained, and involved foster parents could provide effective treatment to children with challenging behaviors in family-based settings. Achieve Services, Inc. is a day training and habilitation program serving adults with developmental disabilities. By focusing on abilities, not disabilities, we strive to increase the independence and quality of life for all individuals in our program. We provide work and training in other life areas to help us meet this goal. Our employment services include community-based jobs as well as work completed for pay in our own in-house workshop. Based on individual needs, participants may receive help and training in other areas such as communication, social skills, behavioral skills and motor skills. My primary duty was organizing Minnesota's National Healthcare Decisions Day, a 4-hour advance directive legal clinic in St. Paul. To make the day a success, I helped: - Coordinate multiple legal organizations to find clients and attorney volunteers; - Draft ancillary documents, including client take-home documents, volunteer orientation documents, an addendum to healthcare directives waiving HIPAA, and information about professional fiduciaries; - Locate and set-up space; - Organize and help run conference calls for coordinating parties.
