Research by Eightfold AI as reported on by The Business Journals indicates that the latest waves of layoffs across the tech industry are disproportionately affecting women, which is especially problematic in light of historic representation issues in the tech field.

According to the data, women have been 65% more likely to find themselves out of work than their male counterparts since these layoffs began rolling through in the early summer of 2022.

Some of this disparity can be attributed to non-problematic factors, like the fact that marketing and recruiting departments have seen an outsized share of cuts, and women make up an outsized proportion of employees in those fields.

Still, especially given historical context, these kinds of disparities should be followed closely to ensure that bias and discrimination don’t underlie any decisions that are shaping the future workforce, in tech and beyond.
