By the Numbers: Cybersecurity and Disability Awareness Month

Each week, the Mployer Advisor team parses through dozens of reports, industry news, updates, and headlines. Not every statistic or data set warrants an exclusive blog post, but there are numbers that deserve to be reported on a smaller scale.     

  

Here are some of the top numbers that caught our attention over the past month.

‘Tis the season for cybersecurity awareness! This is the number of estimated data exposures per employee per day, according to data from Code42. According to the risk management platform, one-third of data breaches are caused by employees, and many of those can be traced back to social media usage.

In honor of October’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, now is the perfect time to audit your cybersecurity policy or add a new chapter on practicing cybersecurity awareness to your employee handbook.

This is the percentage of people with student loans who said that their education was not worth the financial burden, according to a new survey from Morning Consult. The survey also found that respondents believe vocational programs and community colleges to be the best value in higher education, while undergraduate education was deemed valuable by less than half of respondents.

This is the number of working adults who were inadequately insured in 2022, according to “The State of U.S. Health Insurance in 2022” by the Commonwealth Fund. This includes 23% of respondents who were underinsured because their coverage did not provide them with affordable access to healthcare.

This is the number of disabled individuals in the civilian population, according to an article by Employee Benefits News. The labor force participation rate for this group jumped five percentage points from August 2020 to August 2022; this is largely because the COVID-19 pandemic afforded these individuals the opportunity to work from home.  

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and a timely reminder for employers across the country to utilize these oftentimes untapped talent pools.

This is the number of employees who consider recognition vital to their happiness at work, according to an HR Morning article. This HR Executive article even goes as far to say that recognition is a scientific human need.

This is the number of unemployed people per job opening, according to data by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Although this number has been below 1.0 since July of 2021, August marked the first increase since April of 2020 when the ratio peaked at 4.9. Read on for more details on the latest employment numbers from the BLS.

This is the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that those who collect Social Security will see in 2023, according to an article by BenefitsPRO. This is the largest increase since 1981 when the COLA rose by a whopping 11.2%.
