Founded in 1965, Capstone Community Action improves the lives of Vermonters in need by providing opportunities, education, and vital assistance. By breaking down the barriers that prevent people from thriving, we offer the hope people need, the dignity everyone deserves, and a better community for all. Capstone Community Action is part of a nationwide network of community action agencies (CAA) established by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in order to fight America’s War on Poverty. Today, there are nearly 1,000 CAAs across the United States. CAAs are a primary source of support for Americans who are living in poverty in both rural and urban areas. Capstone Community Action is one of five CAAs in Vermont. Capstone Community Action (formerly known as Central Vermont Community Action Council) has served low-income residents of Lamoille, Orange, and Washington Counties and nine communities in Windsor, Addison, and Rutland Counties. Over the years, Capstone has earned a reputation for leadership in education on poverty issues, advocacy on behalf of low-income families, and developing innovative strategies and programs to reduce poverty in Vermont. As a result, we rebranded in 2014 from Central Vermont Community Action Council, Inc. to Capstone Community Action, Inc. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, we provide a wide offering of programs and services for low to moderate income Vermonters aimed at reducing poverty and creating prosperity. The core source of funding for CAAs comes from the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) which channels federal funds through the states to local agencies to fight poverty and promote self-sufficiency. Nationally, CSBG funding accounts for less than 10 percent of CAA funding. We use these federal dollars to build and attract additional investments in their programs from state, local, and private sources.

The Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack Counties, Inc. (CAPBMCI, CAPBM, CAP-BM, BMCAP) is a New Hampshire-based 501(c)(3) private, nonprofit organization. The agency was established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. Under this Act, over twelve hundred Community Action Agencies (CAA) were established nationwide. The primary mission of the organization is to work with low-income families, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities to assist them in their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent. The Agency accomplished this task by providing a broad array of services that are locally defined, planned, and managed. The agency sponsors and manages seventy-three (73) programs designed to meet the needs of children, families, single parents, and the elderly. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food and shelter. The agency is funded by Federal, State, county, and local funds (37 cities and towns in Belknap and Merrimack Counties). The agency receives United Way grants, foundation and charitable grant funds, fees for service, private business donations, and donations from individuals. Granite Bay Care, Inc. (GBC) is committed to creating and maintaining community integration for individuals with Developmental Disabilities, while assisting them to obtain fundamental rights and increasing their quality of life. GBC is a multi-state human service agency providing intensive clinical, nursing, residential, and community-based support services to adults with cognitive, intellectual, mental health, and physical disabilities. GBC currently provides residential care in over 90 homes in Maine. Each home is designed to serve the unique needs of the clients who live there. A holistic approach is used by clinical professionals, management, and staff to encourage each to reach their full potential. We employ over 500 professionals in a dynamic, multi-cultural setting. The Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire (BIANH) is the only state-wide organization in New Hampshire dedicated to brain injury and stroke support, prevention, education, and advocacy for survivors and caregivers. Each year we help over 1000 people in New Hampshire who have sustained one of the following acquired brain injuries: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) (e.g., physical trauma due to accidents, falls, assaults, etc.) Stroke Brain Tumors Aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation Concussion - mild traumatic brain injury Surgery Poisoning (includes alcohol, chemotheraphy, heavy metal exposure, neurotoxins Ischemia Pediatric brain injuries (i.g., Shaken Baby Syndrome & lead paint poisoning) Anoxic injury to the brain Meningitis, encephalitis, and infections of brain We are a chartered state affiliate of the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA; BIAUSA.org) History The Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire was founded in 1993 by parents of brain injury children and teens, who came together to help one another and work to assure that needed services and support were available to New Hampshire citizens with brain injury and their family members.
