Espy Lumber Company has been providing quality building materials to the Lowcountry since 1958. This is the year Wesley Espy founded the company and began doing business on Hilton Head after the first bridge was built linking the island to the mainland. Initially, its primary business was to furnish concrete to the emerging resort developers. During the 1960's, as Hilton Head's population grew from 900 to 2,500, the business was broadened to include lumber and building materials. As a result, the company outgrew its original location on what is today Pope Avenue. In the 70's, Espy sold the concrete operation and continued to expand the lumber and building materials business. In 1979 Espy was acquired by Rodman A. McLeod and H. Ross Arnold, III from the Wesley Espy Estate. During the next 34 years (until his passing in 2013) Rod guided Espy into becoming a leader of building supplies in the Lowcountry. Rod instilled into each and every employee the importance of honesty, integrity and hard work. In 1984, Espy developed and secured the necessary approvals for a master plan for the Arrow Road site and began operating from the entire site, continuing to expand the business in lumber and building materials. In 1988 plans were initiated to renovate Espy’s Hilton Head location. The renovation was completed for the Arrow Road location and opened for business in April, 1990. The Hilton Head location continues to operate from this site today and is the only full line building material company on the Island. In January 1998, a 12-acre site was acquired in the Okatie/Cherry Point area at the intersection of SC Highways 141 and 170. Plans were begun for a second location to serve the expanding construction activity in the Low Country and surrounding areas. Ground was broken in May 2000 and the yard opened for business in January 2001. Today, Espy Lumber is still the only full line building supply on Hilton Head Island, with our Corporate HQ located in Okatie.

Founded in 1990, South Alabama Brick Company is headquartered in Whatley Supply in Dothan, Alabama. Committed to independent distribution, our goal is to provide brick, tile, and related products with quality service to the central & southeast area. In 1992, we established Capital Brick Company, a brick distributorship in Montgomery, Alabama. Between 1995 and 1996, we acquired independently owned brick companies in Mobile (Riley-Stuart Supply), Pensacola (W.R. Taylor and Co.), Ft. Walton Beach (Keego Clay Products), and Panama City (North Florida Brick).

Short and Paulk was established in 1941 by J.P. Short III and his uncle, H.M. Paulk. Today the Company operates out of 6 locations and offers lumber and a diverse line of building materials. Short & Paulk operates Lumberyards in Tifton, Thomasville, Sylvester, Albany, Dawson, Cuthbert and a Tifton-based manufacturing plant producing door units and speciality products. The business has changed a great deal over the years. Since starting the Company up in 1941 with 3 employees, Short and Paulk currently employs over 95 full and part-time employees.

The story of Howard Brothers begins in 1955 when Edwin Howard purchased a small grocery store in Doraville, which was started by his in-laws in 1925. Then, in 1972 he branched next door and established Howard's True Value Hardware. The second hardware store opened in Duluth, GA in 1987 and now also houses the Outdoor Power Equipment Headquarters. The Oakwood Store in Hall County was purchased in April 1999, building in 1996. The Alpharetta Store had its grand opening in March 2013. We opened the Athens location in 2016. Each location serves many residential customers’ hardware needs in an environment that has all the tools and power equipment you're looking for, with the same feel of a traditional, community hardware store.
