Friday, March 3rd, was Employee Appreciation Day.Many companies have unique things they use to celebrate their hard-working employees. Some examples we saw from our employer audience included holding a company-wide event to celebrate (even several through Zoom), gifts such as branded hats or a blanket, special perks like a free lunch, and individual recognition and awards.

The people are the company. Great ideas with mediocre execution are doomed. Mediocre ideas with great execution can build a lasting company. The only difference is the quality of the people and the leadership.

Benefits of employee appreciation

1.    Boosts Employee Morale

Creating an employee appreciation plan is an excellent way to boost employee morale. When employees feel appreciated, they are more likely to have a positive attitude, be more engaged in their work, and have higher levels of job satisfaction. In contrast, when employees feel undervalued or under-appreciated, they may become demotivated, disengaged, and even start looking for other job opportunities.

2.    Improves Employee Retention

Employee retention is crucial to the success of any business. Employee turnover can be costly in terms of time, resources, and money spent on hiring and training new employees. Creating an employee appreciation plan can improve employee retention rates by making employees feel valued and supported.

An employer can improve employee retention by offering ongoing employee recognition programs. For example, a recognition program can be set up where employees are awarded points for their achievements or milestones. These points can then be redeemed for rewards such as gift cards, travel vouchers, or time off.

3.    Increases Employee Productivity

Employee productivity is essential to the success of any business. When employees are motivated and engaged, they are more likely to be productive and produce quality work. Creating an employee appreciation plan can help increase employee productivity by providing employees with a sense of purpose and recognition for their efforts.

An employer can increase employee productivity by providing opportunities for growth and development. For example, offering professional development courses, mentoring programs, or tuition reimbursement can help employees develop new skills and feel more invested in their work.

4.    Promotes Positive Workplace Culture

Creating an employee appreciation plan can promote a positive workplace culture. A positive workplace culture is one that fosters teamwork, creativity, and innovation. Employees who feel appreciated and valued are more likely to collaborate and work together to achieve common goals.

An employer can promote a positive workplace culture by implementing team-building activities or initiatives that encourage employees to work together. For example, holding regular team meetings, organizing team-building retreats, or hosting company-wide events can help foster a sense of community and collaboration among employees.

Best Practices for a Year-Round Employee AppreciationPlan

Employee appreciation should not be just one day of the year. A year-round employee appreciation plan is a great way to ensure that employees feel appreciated and motivated throughout the year.

Here are a few suggestions –

1.    Develop a budget

Before you start any employee appreciation plan, you need to determine the budget you have available for the plan. This will help you plan the events and activities you can afford.

2.    Survey your employees

Before you start planning, it’s a good idea to survey your employees to find out what they value most. This will help you tailor the plan to their needs and preferences. You can use online surveys or suggestion boxes to gather feedback.

3.    Encourage feedback

Encourage employees to provide feedback on the employee appreciation plan and incorporate their suggestions into future plans. This shows that you are listening to their needs and are committed to creating a positive work environment.

4.    Communicate regularly

Communicate regularly with employees about the employee appreciation plan and upcoming events. This helps build excitement and anticipation and ensures everyone is on the same page.

5.    Recognize achievements

Recognize employees for their achievements and contributions throughout the year. This can be done through employee of the month awards, recognition in company newsletters or social media, or even a simple thank you note.

6.    Celebrate milestones

Celebrate important milestones such as work anniversaries, birthdays, and other significant events. This can be done with small gifts or cards, or even a company-wide celebration.

7.    Provide opportunities for growth

Provide opportunities for employees to grow and develop their skills through training and development programs. This shows that you are invested in their long-term success and can help to boost morale and motivation.

8.    Offer flexible work arrangements

Offering flexible work arrangements such as telecommuting or flexible hours can show that you value work-life balance and are willing to accommodate employees’ needs.

9.    Host social events

Host social events such as team-building activities, holiday parties, or company picnics. This helps to build camaraderie and foster a sense of community within the organization.

10.  Provide employee perks

Offer employee perks such as gym membership discounts, local event tickets, or even free coffee or snacks in the office. These small perks can go a long way in showing that you value your employees.

A year-round employee appreciation plan is a great way to show your employees that you value their contributions and are committed to their success. By developing a plan tailored to their needs and preferences, you can help boost morale, motivation, and productivity within the organization. Use the tactics outlined above to create a plan that works for your organization and your employees, and watch as your team becomes more engaged, motivated, and successful – not just on the first Friday in March each year but throughout the year.
