Employee Paid Time Off Policies for Nebraska Employers

Paid time off, or leave, is an important component of an employer's benefits package in Nebraska. Regulations, particularly FMLA, are different for each size of business and may differ at the state level. The right plan for your unique employee group might have a significant impact on retention and competitive hiring.

Should Nebraska Employers Offer Consolidated Paid Time Off Plans?

If you're planning to distribute your employee benefits, it's important to first decide whether you'll offer a consolidated leave plan or a non-consolidated one. A consolidated leave plan is a single amount of time that workers can use for vacation, illness, or personal business purposes. Workers who do not have consolidated leave plans often maintain separate vacation and sick days. Consolidated leave packages are becoming more popular among employers. Nebraska has the highest proportion, with 49% of businesses providing consolidated leave packages.

A paid time off, or paid vacation, plan combines both sick and personal days into one package. This provides employees additional choices while also allowing employers to offer greater flexibility. At five years of service in Nebraska, the average number of leave days in a consolidated plan is 22, compared with just 15 vacation days after five years of service. The average for consolidated leave plans is 25 at 10 years whereas the average for paid vacation is 17.

Do Nebraska Employers have to Offer Paid Vacation?

Employers generally provide paid vacation as a component of a mixed leave plan or as a standalone plan. Nebraska employers offer paid vacation 87% of the time, according to our research. This can vary by industry; think of an hourly staff at a retail shop vs. a technology firm, for example. Download our Mployer Insights report to learn more about how your company's benefits compare.
