In 2006, the two Goodwills merged to form a single non-profit entity, Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia. In 1902, Rev. Edgar J. Helms served a mission assignment in Boston’s South End, which was home to many unemployed immigrants who did not speak English. He was appalled by their living conditions and their desperation for food, clothing, shelter and work. Helms’s brainchild entailed going door-to-door in wealthier neighborhoods to collect donations of clothing and household goods. His mission hired people to mend, repair and re-sell the goods, and paid them day wages. This pioneering social enterprise concept was very different than traditional charities. Helms applied commerce and employment strategies to improve the social well-being of others, referring to it as “giving a hand up, not a hand out.” With the help of Methodist Church funding, Helms helped establish independent Goodwill Industries organizations across the U.S. He also traveled the globe in the 1920s to share the Goodwill message while working on his book “Pioneering in Modern City Missions.” In the 1930s and following World War I, Helms realized that Goodwill’s social enterprise was imperative to serving individuals with disabilities in need of rehabilitation and vocational services. Most Goodwills today continue to be rooted in serving those with disabilities, and they address other challenges such as lack of education, opportunities and language barriers. Combined, the 161 autonomous Goodwill organizations in North America form a $5 billion social enterprise built on human potential.

The Virginia Bankers Association has served as the organized voice for the Commonwealth’s banking industry since 1893 providing solutions to aid in resolving differences, unifying efforts, and accomplishing objectives otherwise not achievable. The VBA represents all Virginia state and commercial banks from the smallest to the largest and works to represent the issues and activities that are of utmost importance to the banking industry. The government affairs and legal department work effortlessly with the legislature and congress to protect the values and standards around which the banking industry was built. The professional development team ensures that there are a multitude of quality seminars, workshops, and conferences each year to promote lifelong learning among bank associates. Through partnerships with trustworthy and cost effective vendors, the VBA is able to offer products and services banks need in order to be successful in serving their customers. While working to better the industry as a whole, the VBA also cares about the well-being of its members and of the community. Research As a major regional funding organization, United Way is uniquely qualified to provide critical information to community leaders and organizations. We have a dedicated research team that studies local data to track problems in our communities and works with partner organizations to develop solutions that actually move the needle. Convening United Way serves as the central convener of our region’s nonprofits and local governments, businesses, schools and volunteers. We identify areas of need and bring together leaders from all sectors to drive positive change in communities across the region. Funding United Way is one of the largest nonprofit funding organizations in the region. We invest in dozens of fantastic nonprofit agencies doing critical work in communities throughout our service area. We use our Steps to Success framework to guide funding decisions and ensure dollars go to organizations and programs working in each of our nine key areas. Empowerment United Way connects individuals with knowledge, resources and volunteer opportunities to help them positively impact their lives as well as the lives of their family members, friends and neighbors.

The Richmond SPCA, founded in 1891, is a non-profit, no-kill humane organization dedicated to the principle that every life is precious. The Richmond SPCA is a national leader in humane care and education, having developed numerous lifesaving programs and services including those dedicated to adoption, rehabilitation, sterilization and education. We save the lives of 4,000 homeless animals each year and care for about 350 cats and dogs daily. The Richmond SPCA is not affiliated with any other private animal welfare organization or SPCA but we regularly transfer pets from local municipal agencies into our care so that they may receive lifesaving treatment and be adopted to loving new homes.

The purpose of the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center is to strengthen Jewish identity by enriching personal, cultural, social and physical development; to foster leadership; and to promote the welfare of both the Jewish community and the community as a whole. Headquartered in Richmond, VA, and supported by public and private funding, Families Forward is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. In September, 2017, Prevent Child Abuse Virginia, CHIP of Virginia, and Early Impact Virginia merged to become Families Forward.

The CAA has established itself as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically for nearly four decades. The conference encompasses many of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Charleston, S.C. The CAA has produced 18 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 15 national players of the year, 15 national coaches of the year and 13 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 25 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2022-23, more than 3,500 of the league’s student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.0 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast and includes several of the nation’s top media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Washington, D.C. (7), Boston (9) and Baltimore (26). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA conducts championships in 24 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis and indoor and outdoor track & field. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball.

Joined VCPI in September 2004 and successfully brought outsourced accounting function in-house. Financial management of 2.5 million dollar organization. Responsibilities include: operational tasks such as processing payables and receivables, payroll, and managing the 401k benefit allocations, building organization budget with Executive Director, monitoring and reporting budget performance, developing investment strategies, managing the annual audit process and developing the pricing for all deliverables and contracts. Grant financial reporting (financial status reports), grant budget monitoring and development of budgets used in grant funding submissions. Annual development and submission of successful indirect cost proposal plans to the Office of Justice Programs. Responsible for development and implementation of marketing strategies for VCPI. This includes oversight of all VCPI branding, the website, the development of promotional pieces for specific projects, the VCPI quarterly newsletter and the annual report. Work collaboratively with VCPI training manager to communicate course offerings to the appropriate audiences in order to successfully fill the course seats.
