On April 2, 2002, Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), Korea’s largest automotive manufacturer, announced it would construct a $1 billion automotive assembly and manufacturing plant in Montgomery, Ala. On April 12, 2002, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, LLC (HMMA) was incorporated. The $1.7 billion plant is the company’s first U.S. manufacturing facility and employs more than 3,000 people with high-paying jobs and full benefits. Additionally, more than 72 suppliers have located businesses throughout North America to support the Hyundai plant. Altogether, these suppliers are expected to create 5,500 additional jobs with a combined capital investment of $500 million. “This new manufacturing facility reaffirms Hyundai’ commitment toward investing in the U.S. economy, as well as its commitment toward U.S. consumers,” said Chairman Chung. “American consumers have recognized Hyundai’s quality, and this plant will enable us to better serve them.” The 2-million square-foot manufacturing plant resides on 1,744 acres of land and includes a stamping facility, paint shop, vehicle assembly shop, a two-mile test track and two engine shops. In May 2005, the facility marked the official start of production with its first saleable 2006 Sonata. HMMA will produce 350,000 vehicles per year at full capacity.

Austal USA’s service business provides global support to U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command and other customers. Austal USA’s San Diego Service Center includes a waterfront facility that will have the capability to drydock small combatants and similar sized ships. Earning 23 safety excellence awards, Austal USA continues to be one of the safest shipyards in America.

The Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy (OMI) develops leaders of character by providing a rigorous seven-year college preparatory program to promote excellence in the four pillars of academics, leadership, citizenship, and athletics. OMI’s four pillars are ACADEMICS, LEADERSHIP, CITIZENSHIP, and ATHLETICS. Using a military framework, the goal of OMI is to graduate cadets who are capable of meeting the admissions requirements for any college in the nation and who are prepared for their roles as future leaders of character. OMI was founded in 2001 after a hard-fought two-year campaign led by then Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown. Governor Gray Davis helped secure the charter after local school boards rejected it. It was the first charter ever sponsored by the state, the first public military school, and the first school sponsored by the National Guard. The first class of 167 seventh-graders enrolled that August under the direction of the Commandant, Colonel Bradford M. Jones, then Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, Command Sergeant Major Alex Cabassa and then Academic Director, Rick Moniz. On May 18, 2007, OMI moved from the Oakland Army Base to current location on Lusk Street.
