Loaves & Fishes Community Services is a registered 501(3) organization serving more than 5,000 people a week, providing healthy food and impactful programs for self-sufficiency. It is one of the largest food pantries in the state of Illinois. Clients receive a variety of healthy food, including fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, and eggs. The Loaves & Fishes CARES programs help clients become self-sufficient through opportunities such as emergency assistance for rent or utilities, assistance with public benefits, car donations, tax preparation, job readiness, budget and credit classes, and Moving Up, a 16-session intensive program to help clients overcome barriers preventing them from becoming self-sufficient. In the early 1970’s, a group of women known as the Women’s Development Council were concerned about the prevalence of domestic violence around them—in their lives, their friends lives, and in the community as a whole. The idea for a shelter—a safe place for victims--was born and Mutual Ground was incorporated in August 1975. The goal of this new agency was to provide emergency shelter for families in crisis and offer 24-hour services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, to include counseling, support, and referrals to other agencies. The first shelter opened in1978 on the top floor of a property rented from the First Presbyterian Church in Aurora. The nation’s economy was ailing, which at the family level translated to higher incidences of domestic violence and sexual assault. Fortunately, things turned around and in 1984 Mutual Ground purchased a two story house on North Lake Street that could serve 14 women and children. Sexual Assault services were housed in a separate building on Lincoln Ave. The need for domestic violence services surged in the early 90’s and Mutual Ground found it was turning away hundreds of women and children each year due to lack of bed space to house them. A search began to find a big enough building for everyone who needed “shelter from the storm.” In 1995, following an enormous $2.3 million capital campaign, Mutual Ground was able to purchase and renovate the building. And after more than 20 years of Sexual Assault Services in one location and Domestic Violence Services in another, Mutual Ground could finally put all services in one place in 1996. Today, in a given year, Mutual Ground provides services to about 1,500 victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, our prevention education program is in 1,750 classrooms and we can accommodate 28 women and their children in our emergency shelter. Our budget is now at $1.8million with a staff of 43 and calls to the hotline exceed 1500 every month.

Troubled by health disparities? So are we. Believing that communities thrive when ALL can work and care for their families, our initiatives keep people healthy, regardless of the ability to pay. Since 2001, our Access DuPage program has cared for 61,000+ uninsured individuals through an expansive volunteer network. Members pay low copayments and every dollar in program cost is matched by 10+ in donated care. DuPage residents with income below 2X the Federal Poverty Level, ineligible for any other program, enrollees are typically working parents. Proactively managing their health, they visit the ER 36% less than uninsured peers. Even after the Affordable Care Act, many remain underinsured. To respond, we launched Silver Access ACA Premium Assistance, giving access to high-quality lower cost plans. Honoring our fair share philosophy by asking members to contribute up to their capacity, they pay one-third of the cost. DuPage Dispensary of Hope, a free pharmacy, is the only existing local resource. Most uninsured pay the full cost of Rx’s, often going without or taking it differently than prescribed to reduce costs. This leads to unnecessary hospital admissions, illness, and even deaths. DDOH addresses this by offering low-income residents 351+ different medications. Building on success directing community planning, DHC leads efforts to improve health equity. A few select recent projects include: • COVID education and vaccine outreach to high barrier communities • Hospital collaborations to coordinate COVID-19 response • Community face mask and flu shot initiative • HEART, Health Equity Response Team, Leadership For over 20 years DHC has addressed health disparities caused by being uninsured/underinsured. At DuPage Habitat we don't address this by providing a hand out, rather we offer a hand up by enabling our partner families to achieve the pride of homeownership working side by side with community volunteers to build or repair their home. Since 1995, DuPage Habitat has sold homes to over 75 limited-income families with over 170 children. Over the next three years our ambitious goal is to serve over 80 hardworking families which we estimate will provide a safe, stable and healthy environment for over 220 children.

L'Arche Chicago is a community in which people with and without intellectual disabilities sharing life in our three homes in Chicagoland. Our core members with disabilities contribute to the full extent possible to creating home life. Core members and assistants work together to shop, clean and cook and they eat and celebrate together. Assistants provide as-needed support for activities of daily living. L’Arche welcomes applications from people of all ages, races, genders, faiths, and sexual orientations. People often join community after college, during a career change, or simply they are looking for growth opportunities. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and assistants are welcomed throughout the year based on the needs of the community.
