With increased sustainability efforts likely coming soon to an office near you (i.e. if they haven’t already), the Harvard Business Review has compiled a list of the 8 responsibilities you can expect your new sustainability officers will generally be overseeing.
In addition to the aforementioned list - which includes creating a vision, building internal capacity to fulfill that vision, engaging stakeholders, bridging sustainability efforts with general business strategy and decision-making processes, managing metrics and reporting, bringing the organization in line with outside frameworks and expectations, innovating wherever possible, and advancing the goals of sustainability in a larger sense beyond the organization itself - the piece goes on to emphasize the importance of execution in all aspects of these efforts as well as the necessity of establishing buy-in and collaboration both internally and externally.
