Employer Advisor recently surveyed hundreds of top HR leaders, asking them to grade their 2023 open enrollment performance across communication, plan design, technology, and overall satisfaction.

To that end, Mployer Advisor recently hosted a webinar for employers across all industries and sizes nationwide that featured the insights and expertise of Josiah Allis, the President and Co-Founder of Design Health, and Brian Freeman, the Founder and CEO of Mployer Advisor.

During the webinar, our speakers analyzed the results of Mployer Advisor’s “2023 Open Enrollment Assessment,” discussed strategies to optimize the open enrollment process, and what factors correlate to a successful open enrollment season.

Below are a few highlights from the webinar event.

Setting the Stage for Open Enrollment 2023

Prior to digging into the nitty gritty of the 2023 open enrollment season, Freeman and Allis discussed what benefits themes and trends from 2022 influenced benefits buyers.

Some of those themes included the following:

  • Rising healthcare costs
  • Inflation and worries about a recession
  • Leave benefits
  • Mental health
  • Financial wellness
  • Utilizing employee benefits as a competitive differentiator

Open Enrollment Survey Results

In January 2023, Mployer Advisor surveyed several hundred top HR leaders to assess their 2023 open enrollment performance across communication, plan designs, technology, and overall satisfaction.

In the survey, 42% of HR leaders gave themselves an “A” when reviewing open enrollment. Meanwhile, over half of respondents said the process could have gone better, and nearly 20% rated it poorly.

What's more, 26% of respondents shared they are still doing enrollment through paper.

One final point of interest: Approximately 80% of employers rated their enrollment process an “A” or “B,” with only half who said they were pleased with their technology platform used during open enrollment. Of employers that rated their enrollment an “A,” more than 75% also gave their employee benefits broker an “A” or “B.”
