Mercer has outlined some guidelines for optimizing employee benefits strategy that include 4 bullet points on best practices when managing remote workers.
First, the authors emphasize the importance of clearly communicating specific offerings available to remote workers that can help them feel connected to the organization and secure in their place within it. If no such offerings currently exist, then that would be a good place to start. Further, that connection and security within the company should include the opportunity to advance within it, which can be encouraged through virtual training and educational opportunities. Of course, more than providing virtual tools and training necessary for remote workers to do their next job, it’s important that despite working off site, remote workers have all the tools and training (virtual or otherwise) to execute on their current job, which sometimes gets overlooked when remote employees go unseen. And finally, make sure to be collecting and analyzing data on how remote workers are utilizing the benefits, perks, and other offerings that the company is providing to ensure that they are having their intended effect.
