In 2020, insurers paid similar costs for in-person and telehealth treatments, according to recent analysis reported by Becker’s Payer Issues.
The Peterson-Kaiser Family Foundation Health System Tracker report found that prices for in-person and virtual medical assistance were largely comparable after examining reimbursement rates among privately insured patients.
The average cost for established patient evaluations was $33 for in-person treatment and $34 for telehealth assessments.
In a statement, the researchers wrote:
“We do not know at this point if private insurers continue to pay for telehealth in parity with in-person care. However, if telehealth payments continue to be the same as those for in-person care, then this raises questions as to whether telehealth will reduce the spending on common health services, as some have predicted.”
