One of only two homes Thomas Jefferson designed for his personal use, Poplar Forest was the place where Jefferson “came to indulge in the life of the mind and renew his personal creativity.” Jefferson and his wife, Martha, inherited the Bedford County plantation known as Poplar Forest from her father in 1773. When his presidency ended in 1809, Jefferson visited the retreat three or four times a year, often staying for several months at a time during planting seasons. Designated a National Historic Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior, and nearly lost to development, Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest plantation in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains was rescued in 1984 by a group of local citizens who sought to preserve it for the cultural and educational benefit of the public. Poplar Forest was opened to the public for the first time in 1986, in its “before restoration” state. Today, the neoclassical architecture of the octagonal house has been returned to Mr. Jefferson’s design. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has recognized the meticulous research and restoration efforts with its highest award, and the plantation has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A visit to Poplar Forest offers a unique opportunity to observe a “live” archaeological dig and historic restoration in progress, as efforts to reveal and restore Thomas Jefferson’s vision for his personal retreat continue.

The Akron Art Museum, dedicated to enriching lives through modern and contemporary art, showcases regional, national and international art created since 1850. The museum’s collection is presented in a spectacular facility designed by Viennese architectural firm Coop Himmelb(l)au and includes over 5,000 works of art, with a strong focus on contemporary painting, sculpture and photography. Nearly a dozen exhibitions each year present prominent artists in various media including painting, sculpture, photography, video, design and glass. The museum also presents temporary art experiences in the Bud and Susie Rogers Garden, a one-acre green space along the museum's south side, designed by renowned landscape architects, OLIN. The Westmoreland Museum of American Art is located just 35 miles east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the heart of historic Greensburg, tucked amidst the breathtaking Laurel Highlands. The United States Navy Memorial, located on America’s main street at 701 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, between the White House and the Capitol Building, is quickly becoming one of Washington’s premier destination locations with more than 110,000 visitors each year. It boasts a 230-person state-of-the-art theater frequently booked for Hollywood movie screenings and a 3,500 square-foot interactive exhibit space that immerses visitors in the rich heritage and culture of the Sea Services, making it a first-class venue for Navy ceremonies and private events.
