The Hampton Roads Community Action Program, formerly known as the Office of Human Affairs, was founded in 1966 as the Newport News Office of Economic Opportunity as a direct result of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. As the 501(c)(3) Community Action Agency, first for Newport News and later expanding into Hampton, HRCAP has worked for over 50 years to promote the self-sufficiency of the low-income residents living in our service area and ameliorate the brutal impact of poverty on the lives of their children. Starting with a handful of initiatives (Medicare Alert, Neighborhood Youth Core, Head Start) HRCAP grew in the 70’s and 80’s to include an ever expanding range of services to low-income residents. Shifts in federal, state and local funding priorities often threatened the agency, an occasionally resulted in the reduction or elimination of programs, but HRCAP persevered and continues to offer a wide range of needed services to the community. The Hampton Roads Community Action Program's mission is “to plan, develop and implement programs that foster self-sufficiency through educational, social, physical and economic development.” The agency operates over 20 programs designed to fulfill that mission within the community. Programs include early childhood education (Head Start, Four-Year-Old Initiative); housing (Fair Housing, Housing Counseling); counseling for pregnant teens (Teen Moms Support Program); assistance to the homeless (Clean Comfort); nutrition services (Summer Lunch); emergency assistance (Emergency Food and Shelter); affordable housing and community development (Peninsula Community Development Corporation) and more.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula has ensured youth living on the Virginia Peninsula have a fun, welcoming, and safe space to engage in an array of development opportunities since 1946. During our after-school and summer programs, youth not only enjoy the benefits of participating in Club programming, but they also develop positive relationships with peers, adult staff, and volunteers. Our core programs focus on Education & Careers, Character & Leadership, Health & Life Skills, The Arts, and Sports, Fitness, and Recreation. More than seventy-two years ago, 250 neighborhood boys in Newport News entered the Boys Club of Newport News on 28th Street and experienced a family atmosphere while engaging in new and unique experiences. The organization has witnessed incredible growth since those first young men walked through those doors. We now serve over 6,000 boys and girls ages 6-18 each year in the cities of Newport News and Hampton and in the counties of York, Gloucester, and Mathews at 13 Club sites.

The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank has been a community leader in providing food security to residents across the Greater Peninsula. Since 1986, we have provided over 236 million meals to residents throughout our service area, which encompasses the Cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and Williamsburg, and the Counties of Gloucester, James City, Mathews, Surry and York. In order to sustain the ever-growing need, the Foodbank collaborates with over 200 partner agencies, made up of local churches, food pantries, soup kitchens, children’s and adult homes/shelters, and other community centers that people turn to in times of need.

We’re incredibly proud of our nearly 30-year history in Hampton Roads. When we started in 1989, we focused on women and children living with HIV/AIDS. Over the years, as HIV has changed, our work has changed. Our organization has grown as well, and we’re ready to meet the diverse needs of our community. Today, LGBT Life Center’s commitment to a healthy Hampton Roads remains as strong as ever. In 1989, CANDII (Children’s AIDS Network) and Full Circle AIDS Hospice Support were two individual agencies working in Hampton Roads to better the community and help those affected by HIV/AIDS. Each did their part to serve their respective clients and educate the community. In 2006, a merger between Full Circle AIDS Hospice Support and CANDII formed AIDS Care Center for Education and Supportive Services. The two agencies came together with a common mission: to serve more individuals and families that are impacted by HIV/AIDS in Hampton Roads. At that time, the agency became ACCESS AIDS Care, uniting the two causes and bringing together two solid reputations to better serve our community. Five years later, ACCESS AIDS Care, together with The Elton John AIDS Foundation, Advocates for Youth, and many wonderful LGBT advocates, opened The LGBT Center of Hampton Roads in June 2011. In 2017, ACCESS AIDS Care and The LGBT Center of Hampton Roads expanded their mission and rebranded as the LGBT Life Center.
