The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is a leader in healthcare practice, education, innovation and research. It is also a branch campus of the UNC schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and public health. the home of UNC Health Sciences at MAHEC and UNC Asheville-UNC Gillings Master of Public Health (MPH) Program. Located in Asheville and founded in 1974, MAHEC serves a 16-county region in Western North Carolina. We are the largest Area Health Education Center in North Carolina, which evolved to address national and state concerns with the supply, retention and quality of health professionals. MAHEC provides patient care at several sites across the region, with Family Health, Ob/Gyn, and Dental Health offices as well as Community Pharmacies. We are the only high-risk obstetrics practice in the region and a safety net provider as an FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) Look-Alike. People in our community and all over the world partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes, alongside volunteers, and pay an affordable monthly mortgage. Founded in 1983 as first Habitat affiliate in North Carolina, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity (AAHH) has helped more than 1,600 adults and children achieve strength, stability and self-reliance on the foundation on stable housing. We believe that everyone deserves a decent place to live, and everyone can do something today to make that possible for another family.

MANNA’s daily operations involve procuring, warehousing, and distributing food to over 220 partner agencies in the 16 counties of Western North Carolina – 18.2 million pounds in 2017/2018. The partner agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other emergency providers to support the more than 100,000 people who are facing food insecurity in WNC. In addition, MANNA provides direct services through our Feeding Kids Year Round Program, which provides MANNA Packs and Summer Packs and our MANNA Food Helpline and team of SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) outreach workers who assist people with access to cash benefits to supplement their food budget. Food insecurity rates are high in WNC, impacting more than 23.6% of children. Rural poverty is a particular challenge in the 6,434 square mile service area, and MANNA is committed to providing excellent service in a sometimes challenging terrain and environment. MANNA FoodBank is the proud recipient of a 4-star Charity Navigator rating for 8 consecutive years, and has a solid network of relationships with local partners, funders, and government agencies. Appalachia Service Project is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that inspires hope and service through volunteer home repair in Central Appalachia. ASP provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation — bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families. For more than 50 years, we’ve made homes “warmer, safer, and drier” for families and provided transformational service experiences for volunteers. By transforming faith into ASP service, volunteers respond to a specific need: housing. By putting aside their own needs and desires, ASP volunteers free themselves to share talent, love, and concern with the people of Appalachia and with one another. More important than construction know-how is a willingness to enter the communities and homes of Central Appalachia with sensitivity, concern, and love — accepting people right where they are and just the way they are. Since 1969, volunteers from across the nation have repaired homes and, in the process, Appalachian families, volunteers, and staff have been immeasurably blessed. Today, with the help of 17,000 volunteers each year, our goal remains to make homes warmer, safer and drier for families in need. Yet ASP is more than a home repair program. It also provides a unique framework that fosters transformational experiences for volunteers, families served, and staff — by building relationships with each other that break down cultural, social and economic barriers. We often hear of significant life changes resulting from the ASP experience: of families renewing their faith in the goodness of others, of people newly motivated to continue their education, of young adults choosing careers of service. No one walks away from the ASP experience unchanged. The results are truly amazing!
