ALLENTOWN RESCUE MISSION
ALLENTOWN RESCUE MISSION
Allentown, Pennsylvania
1-24 employees
The Allentown Rescue Mission is a more than a shelter. We offer three distinct programs to address the needs of all the men who seek our help: the Emergency Shelter, Transformation Program, and the Clean Team Workforce. Our Emergency Shelter provides safe housing, nutritionally balanced meals, clothing, access to medical care, and connects the men to a wide variety of social service and support organizations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our Emergency Shelter is open 24 hours a day. We offer our services to all men over 18 regardless of race, color, creed, political affiliation, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation. The Transformation Program is a residential rehabilitation program that tackles the root causes of homelessness. Through individual assessment and one-on-one guidance, we help the men in our care make and execute plans to improve their lives. This nondenominational, faith-based education and life skills program is designed to teach the men life skills, and job literacy skills. The Clean Team Workforce is a development program offered to graduates of the Transformation Program. In the Clean Team Workforce, the men gain work experience, make connections with outside employers, and accumulate enough savings to fund their transition back into the community. Thus completing the transformation from homelessness to employed, independent living. The Allentown Rescue Mission continually changes address the increasingly complex causes of homelessness. During the 1940s and 1950s we aided veterans suffering from PTSD, in the 60s we adapted our programs to cope with the increased number of homeless men suffering with addictions, and today our programs are aimed at helping men with compounded causes of homelessness. Still, our dedication to providing hope and renewal to homeless men has gone unchanged for over 100 years.

Helping Harvest (formerly known as Greater Berks Food Bank) has continued to successfully fulfill its mission “to feed the hungry” since opening in 1983. In our first year, 500,000 pounds of food was distributed to 12 food assistance programs to provide nourishment for the low income sector of our community. Today, we provide food and other resources to 300 partner agencies in our two county service area. This network consists of traditional food assistance programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. Additionally, we operate several highly effective direct service programs. As the sole distribution center for food assistance in Berks and Schuylkill Counties, Helping Harvest is vital to the health of our community, housing an ever-rotating inventory of refrigerated, fresh, and frozen foods as well as other grocery store items. Annually, Helping Harvest provides nearly 10 million pounds of nourishment to people in need, and to the organizations that provide service to them. Food from our distribution center nourishes over 150,000 individuals throughout Berks and Schuylkill Counties each year.
