“City Union Mission depends on the partnership of friends and supporters so we can continue to grow with the changing needs of the community and ensure that those who are poor, homeless or under-served throughout the metro area have the opportunity for a better life.” — Terry Megli, Chief Executive Officer Since 1924, City Union Mission has provided warm beds, nutritious food, and a place of safety for thousands of poverty-stricken and homeless men, women, and children. Founded by Rev. and Mrs. David Bulkley, the Mission's staff has been uncompromising in their commitment to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the hurting and the lost. City Union Mission receives no government support and is not a United Way agency. The Mission depends completely on the gifts of God's people--individuals, churches, groups, foundations, and businesses who care about the poor and homeless. As our community partners together, we are impacting the lives of our hurting neighbors and providing hope.

Ending violence in our community requires a comprehensive approach of efforts to provide safe places for victims of violence, to empower survivors to rise above their circumstances and to educate the entire community. Through integrated programs in the areas of residential services, clinical services and community education, Synergy touched more than 40,000 people this year. Among Them: Almost 1,000 women and children found refuge in our shelters, while our hotlines handled 4,679 calls. Synergy's therapists saw over 3,000 patients for a total of more than 7,000 individual sessions, 1,400 family sessions and 5,000 group sessions. Over 20,000 people participated in our community education programs to empower and educate people to overcome or avoid violence. Many others participated in mentoring programs, received help with court proceedings, or benefited from another of Synergy's programs. None of this would have been possible without the care and support of individuals and organizations in our community. Join us in overcoming the corrosive impact of violence in Greater Kansas City.

EL CENTRO, INC.
EL CENTRO, INC.
Kansas City, Kansas
25-49 employees
Mission: The mission of El Centro, Inc., a for purpose organization, is “strengthening communities and improving lives of Latinos and others through educational, social, and economic opportunities.” While times have changed during the nearly 40 years we have been a part of this community, one thing has stayed constant- our commitment to the people of Wyandotte and Johnson Counties, particularly the growing Hispanic population. We strive to be the premier organization bridging Latinos and others, resulting in healthy, educated communities. Please take a moment to read our mission and history. It will show you where we’ve been and where we’re going…with your help. History: El Centro was established in 1976 with a $10,000 grant from the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, along with the blessing of Archbishop Ignatius J. Strecker, Father Ramon Gaitan, the commitment of the Cordi Marian Sisters, and a group of energetic and caring community members who saw a need for an organization to address the needs and concerns of Kansas City, Kansas’ Hispanic population. With that care and commitment, El Centro de Servicios para Hispanos was born. In the intervening years since our humble beginnings, we have grown from a single location to three locations in Kansas City, Kansas and Olathe, serving more than 10,400 individuals and families per year. Our programming has evolved from our first program for elders – the Senior Day Program – to include The Academy for Children – a dual-language Pre-K program, workshops on money-management and homeownership, health education and healthy living outreach through our Promotores de Salud (Health Promoters) volunteers, health navigation, domestic violence prevention and intervention, and our policy and advocacy efforts for issues of special interest to our community. While our Senior Day Program is no longer a part of what we do, we still embrace people no matter their stage in life to empower them for the future.
