Residents affected by the proposed freeway fought the construction and filed litigation seeking to temporarily halt construction. In 1979, a solution was reached: the creation of the Century Freeway Housing Program. This state agency was tasked with creating nearly 4,000 units of affordable housing for those displaced by the freeway's construction along with providing minority and female employment opportunities. Having successfully exceeded its initial housing development goal, the agency was privatized and renamed as Century Housing Corporation. Century remains the only known California state program converted into a private, nonprofit organization.

Founded in 1994, Vitamin Angels is a public health nonprofit working to improve nutrition and health outcomes in low-resource settings worldwide. Family Service Agency (FSA) has long been regarded as one of Santa Barbara County’s most reliable and effective nonprofit human service organizations. Established in 1899, FSA continues to improve the health and well-being of our community’s most vulnerable children, families and seniors. Our transformative programs include Senior Services, Long Term Care Ombudsman, Family Support Services, Youth & Family Behavioral Health and School Counseling Services. FSA programs ensure access to food, shelter, and other basic needs, as well as youth mentoring, case management, advocacy and a wide-array of mental health programs. We are committed to providing services where they are needed most: in the community. Eighty percent of our services are delivered on school campuses, at community centers and in clients’ homes. Our programs, which serve more than 28,000 people annually, combine clinical expertise, bilingual and bicultural staff, and close collaboration with other agencies. FSA’s powerful and diverse programs combine clinical expertise, cultural sensitivity, bilingual and bicultural staff, and collaboration with other agencies to offer services which include mental health counseling, case management, parent education, information and referrals, and advocacy. Our mission is to help families transition out of homelessness and poverty through a continuum of housing enriched with supportive services. Since 1983, LAFH has grown to become the largest provider of affordable housing in the San Fernando Valley and a best practices provider of basic needs and homeless services throughout Greater Los Angeles. LAFH is a unique housing provider because its services and real estate development address the full continuum of care for homeless and low-income households, from temporary housing to permanent rental housing, all linked to supportive services. In total we own and operate 22 properties, including three shelters and 19 permanent affordable apartment buildings. In 2011, LAFH reached 3,518 children, parents and single adults through its multi-tiered supportive housing system. The agency maintains a 92% success rate in placing families in permanent, independent housing. Each year, our wraparound service and housing continuum helps more than 500 households transition from the streets to housing stability. By balancing housing costs with basic needs, offering supportive services to increase self-sufficiency, and preserving and increasing the stock of affordable housing in LA, our work helps to build neighborhood infrastructure and inject economic growth into low-income communities.
