VE is a national educational nonprofit program where students learn business by running a business in the classroom. Each year, over 30,000 students from urban and suburban schools across the country collaborate to develop, implement, and run “companies” that replicate the structures and functions of real businesses throughout the school year. Students become CEO, CFO, Vice Presidents, and Directors of their companies and undertake functional roles across all departments. Through our online banking system, these student-run companies engage in real-time transactions with other simulated businesses globally. Since 1996, VE has served over 250,000 high school and middle school students by partnering with schools, districts, and businesses across the United States to provide students with experiences that ready them for college and careers by arming them with essential technical and soft skills to be effective communicators, innovative problem solvers, and global citizens.

HOOD CANAL TELEPHONE CO., INC.
HOOD CANAL TELEPHONE CO., INC.
Union, Washington
25-49 employees
Hood Canal Telephone Co., Inc. was founded in Union, Washington in 1934 by Morisen Pixley. Pixley, a former newspaper man from New York, also founded Washington State’s first Public Utility District #1 in Potlatch. In 1956, Richard (Dick) and Eleanor Buechel purchased the Telephone Company from Walter Karnop. At that time, the company had 123 telephone customers and offered ten- party lines. The switching equipment was located in the basement of a home, while the business office was located at the Union City Garage. In 1967, the company converted from operator-assisted long distance dialing to direct distance dialing. A community antenna system, known as Hood Canal Cablevision, was formed in 1971. In 1995, HCC began offering dial-up Internet service and has since added high-speed options such as DSL, cable modems and fiber optics. HCC’s Internet access was also expanded to include 24-hour tech support, web site hosting, SPAM and virus filtering and free Internet classes. The name Hood Canal Communications was adopted to better reflect the variety of services that the company offers. In 2000, a new business office was opened on Olympic Hwy North in Shelton to better serve our customers in that community. A fiber to the home project was completed in 2004 that brought high-speed Internet, Cable TV and phone service to the Squaxin Island Indian Reservation. Today, Hood Canal Communications strives to continue bringing the latest in telecommunications technology to Mason County.

MERCHANT DU VIN CORPORATION
MERCHANT DU VIN CORPORATION
Tacoma, Washington
1-24 employees
Specialty beer importer Merchant du Vin was founded in 1978, a time when Americans could not buy the world's classic beer styles - in fact, unless they had travelled to Europe most Americans had never even heard of pale ale, hefeweizen, or Trappist ale. MdV founder Charles Finkel realized that the flavors found in the great beers of England, Germany and Belgium were a universal pleasure that should be available to all adults. The goal of Merchant du Vin is to enhance people's lives via the unmatched aromas and flavors found in great beer. Merchant du Vin's selling proposition is to educate the consumer and arouse curiosity as to the differences among the classic beer styles, and to make these beers available for purchase at stores, restaurants, and bars. Merchant du Vin's portfolio of beers comes from the nations with deep, rich brewing traditions: England, Scotland, Germany, and Belgium.
