In 1924, New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. began as a commitment between J. S. Detwiler and his son, Paul I. Detwiler. Over the next two decades, J. S. and Paul acquired several other quarries in addition to blacktop and ready mix concrete plants. In 1949, J. S. included his other sons, Emmert, Dale, and Galen, in the company’s operations. After the company incorporated in 1950, the four brothers expanded and diversified NES&L Co., Inc., adding precast/prestressed concrete plants, concrete pipe plants, and more quarries. During the 1970’s, NES&L Co., Inc. acquired Martin Limestone, Inc. in Blue Ball, Pennsylvania, and Valley Quarries, Inc. in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. In 2000, the company added Buffalo Crushed Stone, Inc. in Buffalo, New York, to its list of subsidiaries. In 2002, the company acquired Lancaster Stone. Stabler Companies Inc. and certain of its subsidiaries were added in 2007, expanding their services throughout the United States. The commitment that began between father and son continues today in this family-owned corporation guided by fourth- and fifth-generation Detwilers. That commitment comes from company personnel as well, since many of them are third- and fourth-generation employees. The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development named NES&L Co., Inc. one of the 50 best places to work among companies with 250 or more employees. From one quarry to a myriad of production facilities, quarries, and contracting services, NES&L Co., Inc. continues to strive to be a leader as a building materials supplier and highway contractor.
