Established in 1945, The Pittsburgh Foundation is one of the nation’s oldest community foundations and is the 15th largest of more than 750 community foundations across the United States. The Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) is an international technical association representing iron and steel producers, their allied suppliers and related academia. The association is dedicated to advancing the technical development, production, processing and application of iron and steel. AIST was established on January 1, 2004, by the merger of two longstanding societies, the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers (AISE) founded in 1907 and the Iron & Steel Society (ISS) founded in 1974. The best practices of both predecessor organizations were incorporated into AIST to create a strong international, member-based technical organization that can sustain itself in an environment of continual change. AIST’s professional and student member base totals over 18,000, representing more than 70 countries and including engineers, operators, corporate administrators, researchers and educators. 38% of AIST members are industry suppliers, 29% producers, 30% students and 3% academia. AIST members actively participate within the association through technology divisions, member chapters, board of directors and the AIST Foundation. AIST is committed to presenting superior technical meetings, conferences, exhibits and publications to better serve those involved in the iron and steel community, including steel manufacturers, suppliers, consumers and academics. AIST’s major international conference, AISTech, consists of more than 400 technical presentations, over 500 exhibiting companies and 6,000-8,000 attendees. This annual event brings together technologies from around the world, promoting a global network to help steel producers and suppliers compete in today’s global marketplace.

The Allegheny Conference on Community Development works with public & private sector leadership to improve the Pittsburgh region's economic future and quality of life. Founded in 1944, the Allegheny Conference is one of the nation's leading economic and community development organizations, combining strong private sector leadership with commitment from public sector partners to move solutions to challenges forward. The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation was founded in 1964 by a group of citizens who passionately believed that historic preservation, rather than massive demolition, could be a tool for renewing communities, creating pride among residents, and stimulating the economy. At the time, vast amounts of public money were being spent to replace some of Pittsburgh’s most historic neighborhoods and commercial areas with characterless architecture, parking lots and roadways. And after more than four decades of work in Allegheny County, PHLF has shown that architectural landmarks and historic neighborhoods are community assets and that historic preservation can be a catalyst for urban renewal. "There is not a preservation organization on the local level anywhere in the country that can match the work of the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation," said Richard Moe, a former President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. More than 2,000 members support PHLF’s work that is carried out under the guidance of 75 trustees by 20 full-time staff members and 5 part-time employees, plus more than 50 volunteers. PHLF includes a non-profit corporation, Landmarks Community Capital Corporation (LCCC), and a for-profit subsidiary, Landmarks Development Corporation (LDC). LCCC makes loans and obtains grants and investment capital which it uses to finance and develop projects that assist in the revitalization of urban centers, towns, and neighborhoods.

Innovation Works (IW) is the Pittsburgh region’s most active investor in and supporter of early-stage companies developing hardware, software and life sciences technologies. Though focused exclusively on helping startups in the southwest PA region, IW’s level of investment activity makes it one of the most active investors in the U.S. Innovation Works is part of the statewide Ben Franklin Technology Partners, a network of four centers developed to help diversify PA’s economy and retain the state’s high caliber innovations that are invented and incubated here. The Materials Research Society (MRS) is an international organization of almost 15,000 materials researchers from academia, industry and government, and a recognized leader in promoting the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research and technology to improve the quality of life. MRS was established in 1973 by a visionary group of scientists who shared the belief that their professional interests were broader in scope than existing single-discipline societies, and that a new interdisciplinary organization was needed. MRS sponsors two major annual Meetings offering approximately 95 topical symposia. The Society recognizes professional and technical excellence, conducts symposium tutorials, and encourages technical interaction among college students through University Chapters, and among materials professionals through regional Sections. Headquartered in Warrendale, Pennsylvania (USA), MRS membership now spans over 90 countries, with more than 46 percent of members residing outside the United States. In addition to its communications and publications portfolio, MRS organizes high-quality scientific meetings, attracting over 12,000 attendees annually and facilitating interactions among a wide range of experts from the cutting edge of the global materials community.
