The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is a leader in healthcare practice, education, innovation and research. It is also a branch campus of the UNC schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and public health. the home of UNC Health Sciences at MAHEC and UNC Asheville-UNC Gillings Master of Public Health (MPH) Program. Located in Asheville and founded in 1974, MAHEC serves a 16-county region in Western North Carolina. We are the largest Area Health Education Center in North Carolina, which evolved to address national and state concerns with the supply, retention and quality of health professionals. MAHEC provides patient care at several sites across the region, with Family Health, Ob/Gyn, and Dental Health offices as well as Community Pharmacies. We are the only high-risk obstetrics practice in the region and a safety net provider as an FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) Look-Alike. MANNA’s daily operations involve procuring, warehousing, and distributing food to over 220 partner agencies in the 16 counties of Western North Carolina – 18.2 million pounds in 2017/2018. The partner agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other emergency providers to support the more than 100,000 people who are facing food insecurity in WNC. In addition, MANNA provides direct services through our Feeding Kids Year Round Program, which provides MANNA Packs and Summer Packs and our MANNA Food Helpline and team of SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) outreach workers who assist people with access to cash benefits to supplement their food budget. Food insecurity rates are high in WNC, impacting more than 23.6% of children. Rural poverty is a particular challenge in the 6,434 square mile service area, and MANNA is committed to providing excellent service in a sometimes challenging terrain and environment. MANNA FoodBank is the proud recipient of a 4-star Charity Navigator rating for 8 consecutive years, and has a solid network of relationships with local partners, funders, and government agencies.
