STILLWATER MINING COMPANY

The Montana operations consist of the Stillwater Mine, East Boulder Mine, and the Metallurgical Complex, where we extract and process platinum group metals (PGM) from the J-M Reef. This is the only known significant source of PGMs in the United States and the highest-grade PGM deposit known in the world. These operations primarily produce palladium (78%) and platinum (22%). The mines have been operating for over 35 years and are well-positioned to continue their strong operations for decades to come. The nearby Columbus, Montana, Metallurgical Complex smelts mined material to produce PGM-rich filter cake and recycles autocatalysts to recover PGMs.

That makes us uniquely qualified to tell the stories of the American West like no other museum can. With our galleries, exhibitions, programs, and kid-approved activities, your whole family is sure to exclaim, “I found my true West!” The Center is located in the authentic western town of Cody, founded by our namesake, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody. We’re also located in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone region—just outside Yellowstone National Park’s East Gate. So we’re surrounded by the majesty of the Rockies and are privy to the history and myths of the Old West, the vibrant life of the New West, and the living cultures of Plains Indian peoples.
