Our Sisters' School opened in 2008 as a tuition-free independent school for girls, in grades 5 to 8, from low-income families. Our mission is to educate and inspire middle school girls from the Greater New Bedford area to reach their full potential in a safe, supportive and challenging environment. We have no religious affiliation. We are named after a few bold, brave women called Sister Sailors who joined expeditions on whaling ships in the early 1800's. Converts finding aids to Encoded Archival Description (EAD) using Oxygen XML editing software and posts them to Rhode Island Archival and Manuscript Collections Online (RIAMCO) with links from the Redwood Library website. Assists with exhibit installation in the Peirce Prince Gallery and vitrines as needed. Shares responsibility with professional staff for reference assistance to researchers through in-person appointments, by telephone, and by email as needed. Supervises various Special Collections volunteers and interns.
