ABOUT THE LOUISVILLE ORCHESTRA Founded in 1937 under the artistic leadership of Robert Whitney, The Louisville Orchestra performs over 125 concerts each season throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana. The LO has had a long commitment to music education. Their Making MUSIC program, which celebrated its 75th year in 2014, earned the LO the 2001 Leonard Bernstein Award for Outstanding Educational Programming. The Louisville Orchestra’s rich history included a deep dedication to contemporary music, and started commissioning new works in 1948. By 1950 the LO’s First Edition Recordings were distributed globally, sharing the music of celebrated composers such as Aaron Copland, Dimitri Shostakovich and even Duke Ellington. In 2010, the acclaimed film, “Music Makes a City – A Louisville Orchestra Story,” was released documenting the first thirty years of the orchestra’s history. Under the galvanizing leadership of new Music Director Teddy Abrams, the creative resurgence of the Louisville Orchestra continues. Bringing engaging and exciting music to the entire Louisville metro is at the heart of the LO’s mission. With an unwavering commitment to innovative community engagement and a goal to reignite the world-renowned position the Louisville Orchestra held for decades as a leader of musical advancement, the LO is again commissioning and performing world premieres and expanding connections between musicians and music lovers.
