I was hired by a local Kansas City company to go audit their operation in Iraq. Once arriving I realized nothing had been done with their accounting since they had been there. They were paying their bills (with cash---four letter word to us accounting professionals however no one would take a check in Iraq so....) I was given 24 boxes of invoices that were written in Arabic, Turkish and Kurdish. I worked with an interpreter long enough to learn their number signs then started to do data entry to recreate the last 3 years of accounting information. I started from scratch and created a general ledger and chart of accounts. It was a rewarding challenge and pushed me to excel at my profession. I would have loved to have stayed longer, however I finished the contract position before what they had expected.
