In 1974, Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center (ANHC) began service with a handful of clinicians in a trailer. Since that time, it has grown to become one of Alaska’s largest and most comprehensive primary care medical and dental practices. ANHC is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) under section 330 of the Public Health Act. It was Alaska’s first Community Health Center (CHC), and remains the state’s largest, serving over 14,000 patients in more than 40,000 visits per year. ANHC will continue to provide services from its Fairview Health Center location through September 13, 2012. A brand new state-of-the-art Health Center will open on September 17, 2012 in midtown Anchorage, near the intersection of C Street and International Airport Road. Denali Family Services (DFS) was incorporated in May 1995 as Alternatives Child and Family Guidance Clinic. Representing the vision of the founding director, Faye Nieto, the agency operated as an outpatient psychological and psychiatric provider with a child protection visitation program. By 1996, the agency provided wrap-around services for the “severely emotionally disturbed” (SED). In 1997, DFS became a child placement agency with the ability to recruit, license, train, and supervise foster homes and place children in those homes.
