Civitan International is an organization of volunteer service clubs around the world, dedicated to helping people in their own communities. Civitans help wherever the need arises – from collecting food for a homeless shelter, to volunteering at their local retirement home, to building a playground for children with disabilities. Civitans have been helping people since the organization’s founding in 1917, by a group of businessmen determined to make a difference in their community.

I worked in the office of WCC with a variety of administrative duties. I especially enjoyed working in a sort of “triage” situation, being the first person a prospective patient would talk to when they were seeking the right counselor, psychologist or psychiatrist to meet with. It was a privilege and joy to help guide people to the best fit for them.

Serve as senior professional at the Birmingham Jewish Federation, the Jewish community’s central fundraising, planning and community relations agency. These have included projects and programs connecting the Jewish community and the broader Birmingham community; coordinating activities among agencies within our Jewish community; managing a daily newsletter with an international audience; and raising funds for the Federation’s annual campaign and other special fundraising efforts. Solicited five and six figure gifts for the Federation. Other signature efforts have included heading the Federation’s outreach to Jewish college students on Alabama’s campuses and developing and managing an ongoing program, called “You Belong In Birmingham,” to engage Millennials more deeply in both the Jewish and broader civic communities. Serve as the Federation’s spokesperson on complex community issues; written educational articles on Jewish topics for the broader Alabama media; represent the Federation in a variety of community settings and work with senior volunteer leaders to chart the course of the organization during a period of change. During the past year and a half, have served simultaneously in the two roles described above as part of a community initiative to blend the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Federation.
