Routine Dental Care (Preventive Care)

Routine dental care, also known as preventive care, refers to dental services that are meant to maintain oral health and prevent dental problems. These services are typically covered by dental insurance plans and include regular check-ups, cleanings, and x-rays.

Key features of routine dental care in insurance include:

  • Covered services: Preventive dental care services, such as oral exams, cleanings, and x-rays, are typically covered by dental insurance plans.

  • Importance of prevention: The emphasis on preventive care is to prevent dental problems from developing or getting worse.

  • Frequency of visits: The frequency of visits for preventive care is typically twice a year or every six months.

  • Cost-sharing: Some dental insurance plans may require cost-sharing for preventive care services, such as a copayment or coinsurance.

  • Annual limits: Dental insurance plans may have annual limits on the number of preventive care services that are covered.

Example: A dental insurance plan may cover two routine dental check-ups and cleanings per year, with no cost-sharing required for the patient. The plan may also cover one set of x-rays per year. The purpose of these services is to detect and prevent dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer.
