Annual events include Hopelink Can Madness -- a bracketed tournament between local businesses to help stock food banks following the holidays; an annual October fundraising luncheon at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue (attended by about 1,800 guests every year); and the Turkey Trot 5K Family Fun Run & Walk on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Every year, nearly 4,000 volunteers donate over 62,000 hours; helping people and changing lives.

Police responded to the incident and looked for an answer to the overall issue of juvenile crime and vandalism, a growing problem in the community. In response, Deputy Joe Woelfert opened the first Boys & Girls Club (originally called the Boys Club) in Washington State—the North Seattle Boys & Girls Club. The Club was a great success, and within two years, eight Clubs sprouted up in the area. Today there are 35 Clubs around greater Seattle, each one focused on enriching the lives of kids every day.

FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN-NATIONAL
FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN-NATIONAL
Portland, Oregon
50-99 employees
Friends of the Children was founded in 1993 in Portland, OR with just three Friends—salaried, professional mentors—and 24 children. Today, we are a national network with 36 locations across the country. Friends of the Children was founded by Duncan Campbell, a successful business entrepreneur whose own troubled childhood inspired him to found the organization. Our innovative model pairs children who are in foster care or in high-poverty schools with a Friend. Each child selected for the program has a Friend by their side from kindergarten through high school graduation—12+ years, no matter what. Research has shown that to break the cycle of generational poverty, children need long-term, relationship-based support to graduate from high school, remain free from involvement in the criminal justice system, wait to parent until after their teen years, and pursue opportunities through post-secondary education, serving our country or finding living-wage employment. Third-party evaluation of program graduates shows that: • 83% of our youth graduate with a high school diploma or a GED; • 93% remain free from juvenile justice system involvement; • 98% wait until after their teen years to become parents; and • 92% go on to enroll in post-secondary education, serve our country, or enter the workforce.

STILLAGUAMISH TRIBE OF INDIANS
STILLAGUAMISH TRIBE OF INDIANS
Arlington, Washington
50-99 employees
Many centuries ago, long before the area was settled, long before forests and grasslands were replaced with asphalt, our ancestors celebrated the journey of life and lived from the resources this land provides. As their children played and learned about nature, the adults would hunt, fish, and hand craft items for daily survival. Festively, they would periodically gather to celebrate and give thanks for all they had. We--their descendents--the Stillaguamish people reverently celebrate the rich culture and history that was, and still is, ours. The Stillaguamish Tribe Of Indians, a sovereign, federally recognized native tribe, is committed to serving our members, preserving our culture, and continuing the stewardship of our native lands.
