Officially founded in 1954 by Bliss H. Crandall—now widely known as the “father of computerized dairy records”—DHI began as a family business operated out of the basement of the Crandall home in Logan, Utah. Bliss, then Assistant Director of the Statistical Laboratory at Utah State University, combined with Lyman Rich to develop the first system to automate the processing of dairy management records using IBM punched card equipment and tabulators.
