The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is the primary fundraising partner, 501(c)(3), for the Blue Ridge Parkway, providing support for initiatives along the 469-mile route, including historical and cultural preservation, environmental protection, visitor amenities, and educational outreach. We do this by: - Collaborating closely with the superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway and additional National Park Service staff to identify critical needs fueled by declining federal funding. - Raising funds through individual gifts, grants, endowments, and charitable trusts to achieve projects and programs in North Carolina and Virginia. - Listening to our Community of Stewards and representing their wishes for the future of this cherished national park unit. - Partnering with other nonprofits, businesses, chambers of commerce, and tourism authorities. Awarding grants for community initiatives that serve the best interests of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our mission includes protecting cultural history and engaging the next generation of public land stewards. To improve the health of children and help them connect to the outdoors, the Foundation started the Kids in Parks program, a network of self-guided trail adventures in 2009. Since 2013, the Foundation has funded music programming at the Blue Ridge Music Center, which passes on the musical traditions of the region with bluegrass, old-time, Americana, and country blues performances.

Community Building Initiative (CBI) is a nonprofit organization established in 1997 by government and civic leaders that works to achieve racial and ethnic inclusion and equity in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Charlotte-Mecklenburg is marked by its rich identity as an historic New South community - an identity that continually evolves as its population becomes more racially, ethnically and culturally diverse. Inspired by the Pope’s call on every parish to host one refugee family, guided by her institution’s Quaker tradition, and animated by the Arab-Islamic word for campus (حرم) which means “sanctuary,” Diya Abdo, associate professor of English at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, U.S.A founded Every Campus a Refuge, an initiative which calls on every college and university around the world to host one refugee family on their campus grounds and to assist them in resettlement. Now, more than ever, private colleges and universities can play a pivotal role in housing and resettling refugees. Thus far, Guilford College has hosted 42 refugees total (23 of them children between the ages of 10 months and 17 years). The hosted families have come from Africa and the Middle East, including two Syrian families. Our campus community assisted them in their resettlement in Greensboro and continues to maintain connections with them after their “graduation” from the Every Campus A Refuge Program. Guilford College is currently hosting on its campus a 9-member family. This compassionate hospitality carries with it an incredible educational opportunity: the campus, working across its various silos and in collaboration with its local community, welcomed not just families but the “real world” into its proverbial “bubble.”Everybody’s life is transformed in the process. During this time of deep Islamophobia, xenophobia and racism, there is no better moment for campuses to intervene directly and materially in the discourse around refugees, immigrants and “others” — to transform the narrative from one of fear to fact, hatred to empathy, ignorance to awareness. ​Will your campus be the next refuge?
