In 1991, a group of parents and professionals in Iowa came together to create new living and working opportunities for adults with autism. They researched other programs around the country and talked with experts in the field of autism. From these efforts Balance Autism took root. When founded as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization in 1994 it was named The Homestead because its earliest program focused on a working farm where adults with autism could live and work, raising fruits and vegetables. Since that beginning 25 years ago, Balance Autism has evolved. Our capabilities have broadened. Our staff has increased. We now serve persons of all ages. As the field of autism research has evolved, we’ve brought its most effective solutions to the persons and families we serve. Today, Balance Autism offers services to more than 300 children and 150 adults annually; employs 400 highly trained and devoted staff members and has an operating budget of $21 million. And yet, as much as we’ve grown, our mission has remained rooted in our core value: to provide balance in the lives of those with autism. On With Life was the dream of a dedicated, passionate group of survivors and their families, faced with the challenge of rebuilding lives shattered by brain injury. Today, On With Life is proud to provide a continuum of specialty services for persons with acquired traumatic brain injury, including: Post-Acute Inpatient Program: Located in Ankeny, Iowa, this is Iowa’s only post-acute inpatient brain injury rehabilitation program. Our sole focus is helping people get on with life after traumatic or acquired brain injury or other neurological disorder. Long-Term Skilled Care Facility: Located in Glenwood, Iowa, this 32-bed program is Iowa’s only skilled care program specifically designed for youth and younger adults with brain injury or other neurological disorder. Outpatient Program: Located in Ankeny, this program was developed to meet the outpatient therapy needs of brain injury survivors. Community Services: This program assists individuals to maintain functional life skills while living in their homes and actively participating in their communities. Neuropsychological Evaluation and Consultation Services: A neuropsychological evaluation is designed to study brain-behavior interactions, the health of the individual’s brain, and the problems that brain dysfunction can cause. Apartments at Owl Creek: Located in Ankeny, this service is for persons who experience long-term disability following a brain injury and are able to live independently.
