Original Medicare Plan

Original Medicare is a fee-for-service health insurance program offered by the federal government that provides healthcare coverage to eligible individuals aged 65 or older, people with certain disabilities, and those with end-stage renal disease. Here are the key features of Original Medicare:

• Parts A and B: Original Medicare is made up of two parts: Medicare Part A, which covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care services; and Medicare Part B, which covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and some medical equipment and supplies.

• Cost-sharing: While Original Medicare covers many healthcare expenses, there are still out-of-pocket costs that you will be responsible for, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. For example, in 2021, the Medicare Part A deductible is $1,484 per benefit period, and the Medicare Part B deductible is $203 per year.

• Provider choice: Original Medicare allows you to see any healthcare provider who accepts Medicare, anywhere in the United States. This gives you a great deal of flexibility in choosing your doctors and hospitals.

• Prescription drug coverage: Original Medicare does not include coverage for most prescription drugs. If you want this coverage, you must enroll in a Medicare Part D plan, which is offered by private insurance companies.

• Supplemental coverage: To help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare, you may choose to enroll in a Medigap policy, which is also offered by private insurance companies.

Example:

Let's say you are 67 years old and eligible for Original Medicare. You enroll in both Medicare Part A and Part B to receive healthcare coverage.

You see a doctor for a routine check-up, and Medicare Part B covers the cost of the visit. However, you are responsible for paying the $203 deductible for Part B before Medicare starts to pay.

Later, you have to be hospitalized for a medical condition, and Medicare Part A covers the cost of your hospital stay. However, you are responsible for paying the $1,484 deductible for Part A before Medicare starts to pay.

Overall, Original Medicare provides comprehensive healthcare coverage for eligible individuals, but it does not cover all healthcare expenses. It is important to understand the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare and consider enrolling in additional coverage, such as a Medicare Part D plan or a Medigap policy, to help cover these costs.
