We are a registered broker dealer, and a registered investment advisor. Functioning as independent businessmen and women, we each have our own clients, but share a belief in growth investing for the long term. We each have different ways of analyzing companies and managing client accounts, but we work together to tap the group’s diversity of ideas and opinions. This multiplicity of opinion serves to test each idea from a variety of angles—both before and after a broker acts upon it. Although we share information, we often don’t invest in the same stocks or at the same time. In fact, we occasionally find ourselves on opposite sides of a security. While each broker is responsible for his or her own investment decisions, we are aided by our analyst colleagues who scour the market for growth opportunities; our account managers who help execute our investment programs and work with clients; and our traders who connect us to the markets. All brokers (and most employees at GGHC) invest their own money in the same companies as their clients. Successes and mistakes are felt by us all. There are times when clients’ accounts decline, and yet we continue to trade and charge commissions. Staying this painful course requires long-term thinking, trust, and patience.

We seek to emphasize businesses where competitive advantages can be maintained, where earnings streams are sustainable and growing, and where valuations are judged to be reasonable. Discipline is the Harris Associates way. Our long, consistent record of excellence is built on our fundamental belief in value investing, which goes beyond short-term performance, focusing on long-term quality and returns. In constructing portfolios for our clients, we seek out companies that we believe are trading at significant discounts to their underlying value. We view every stock purchase as if we were buying a piece of a business, not just a stock certificate. We look for managers who seek to maximize the long-term value of the business for its owners by running efficient operations, concentrating on cash flow and allocating capital wisely. Our belief in our process helps us to stand firm in our philosophy through the natural ebbs and flows of the markets, striving to exceed our clients’ high expectations. At our core, we believe in good investments. This rings especially true for our most important assets — our employees. Work-life balance is important in our culture, with world-class benefits and a friendly atmosphere. As a firm of about 200 people, we’re proud to offer opportunities for those who want to create their own path; to prove themselves and be recognized for hard work; to thrive in a team environment. Select Equity Group manages approximately $40 billion across long-only and long/short equity strategies that share a fundamental investment philosophy and centralized research effort. The Firm was founded on the premise that rigorous, independent research and disciplined, long-term investing will generate superior returns for our clients. Our investment team of over 60 professionals includes a 16-person field research division composed of former journalists and sourcing specialists. We seek to identify the highest quality businesses that the public markets have to offer – those with strong, predictable growth, high returns on invested capital and well-established barriers to competition. We are not interested in owning most businesses at any price. We make minimal use of Wall Street research, and we do not actively share our insights with peers. Our independent process and focus on a narrow subset of businesses has delivered portfolios that we believe are meaningfully different than those of our peers. The Firm is employee owned and has been located at 380 Lafayette Street in lower Manhattan since the early 1990s.
