SPRINGBOARD COLLABORATIVE
SPRINGBOARD COLLABORATIVE
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
51-200 employees
Children spend 75% of their waking hours outside of the classroom, yet our nation does shockingly little to capture educational value from this time for low-income kids. We coach educators and family members to help kids learn to read by 4th grade. Springboard envisions a world in which all children have the requisite literacy skills to access life opportunities. Nationally, we are the only organization to have cracked the code on equipping marginalized families to teach reading at home. At Springboard, we believe that family-educator collaboration is the most joyful, culturally affirming, and cost-effective way to give kids access to high-quality instructional time. Our recipe for impact is a method called Family-Educator Learning Accelerators (or FELAs). FELAs are 5-to-10-week cycles during which families and educators team up to help kids reach learning goals. In the beginning, educators and family members build a relationship, measure the student’s baseline, and set a learning goal. Over 5-10 weeks, the family-educator team convenes weekly or biweekly to share skills and support each other’s efforts. On a daily basis, children work toward their goals by practicing with their teachers, with their families, and independently. The cycle concludes by measuring progress and celebrating together; small wins lead to big wins! When educators and families collaborate, the results are extraordinary. In districts that struggle to get 20% of parents to show up for report card conferences, Springboard’s weekly family workshops average 88% attendance. For every hour that a teacher leads a workshop, parents deliver 25 hours of tutoring at home. As a result, students average a 3-4-month reading gain during each program cycle, closing the gap to grade-level by half in just five or ten weeks.

CHILDRENS LITERACY INITIATIVE
CHILDRENS LITERACY INITIATIVE
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

CLI's mission is closing the gap in reading achievement between children in poverty and their middle-class counterparts. Effective literacy instruction combined with great children's books is the heart and soul of CLI's programs. The majority of children in the classrooms we serve are from economically disadvantaged families with little or no access to books. When we furnish classroom collections (up to 200 children's books) and assist pre-K through 3rd grade teachers in literacy instruction, we work to give these children an essential tool for academic success and an opportunity to develop a life-long love of reading. Headquartered in Philadelphia since our founding in 1988, CLI has been funded by government and private grants as well as many generous individuals. Our clients have included the school districts of Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Newark, and Philadelphia.

ST. AUGUSTINE PREPARATORY SCHOOL
ST. AUGUSTINE PREPARATORY SCHOOL
Richland, New Jersey
51-200 employees
St. Augustine Preparatory School is a private, Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory school. Inspired by the life and thought of St. Augustine of Hippo, we aspire to be an educational community where together, through faith and reason, we seek a deeper knowledge of ourselves, of the world and of God. The restless love of truth, so central in the life of St. Augustine, must be the foundation of our Augustinian education. We want our students to be intellectually curious, rigorous and independent thinkers who are not satisfied with easy answers but are willing to search continuously for a greater understanding of themselves and the world. We provide our students with a rich, challenging and structured curriculum that prepares them for future university studies, but more importantly sets them on the path towards a life-long pursuit of truth, understanding and wisdom in their lives. We believe students must be both challenged and nurtured to achieve the highest standards of excellence in their endeavors. As a Catholic school, we understand our mission is to educate the whole person, taking into consideration all aspects of the student’s being: body, mind, heart and spirit. To achieve this, we offer our students a variety of opportunities to develop their God-given talents, including sports, the arts, community service and spiritual development. Also integral to our mission is the formation of our students’ character. Beginning with universal human virtues (honesty, respect, responsibility), we also invite our students to listen to the call of the Gospel of Jesus and to let God’s grace transform their lives so that they may aspire not just to a merely good human life, but also to a truly holy life. The ideal St. Augustine graduate is a young person who thinks with clarity, acts with integrity and loves with generosity.
