FIGHTING HUNGER AND FEEDING HOPE IN SAN ANTONIO AND SOUTHWEST TEXAS. The San Antonio Food Bank takes pride in fighting hunger, feeding hope in our 16 county service area. We believe that no child should go to bed hungry, adults should not have to choose between a hot meal and utilities, nor a senior sacrifice medical care for the sake of a meal. Founded in 1980, The San Antonio Food Bank has quickly grown to serve 58,000 individuals a week in one of the largest service areas in Texas. Our focus is for clients to have food for today but to also have the resources to be self-sufficient in the future. Fighting hunger is our number one priority but we also serve to educate and provide assistance in many other ways. We achieve this through our variety of programs and resources available to families, individuals, seniors, children, and military members in need. The work to end hunger in Texas is a joint effort with anti-hunger champions from all communities. Hunger in our communities impacts us all – regardless of race or gender. That's why it's important for the San Antonio Food Bank to commit to equal-opportunity hiring practices. Since 1979, CAMP has provided recreational experiences for individuals with special needs based on the core value that everyone should experience the opportunity to succeed in a supportive environment. Our goals fall into three primary categories: 1. Recreation opportunities year-round for over 1,000 individuals with special needs. 2. Respite opportunities year-round for families and caregivers. 3. Education opportunities for the community in the form of volunteer opportunities for high-school and adults, hands-on continuing education opportunities for healthcare professionals, and partnerships with other non-profits in the area to serve the community at large. Year-round programming starts with Summer CAMP (May-August) where over 850 campers participate in traditional camp activities modified to meet their individual needs. Respite Club is offered September – May, and consists of Respite Weekends (9 monthly weekend camps), Parents Night Out (9 monthly evening events), Teen and Adult Day Adventures (9 monthly teen and adult outings), and TADA Life Skills events (9 monthly events). Additionally, CAMP offers 5 Family Retreats throughout the school-year to support families. Year-round, CAMP programs alleviate medical, physical, developmental, social, and intellectual barriers for more than 1,500 campers by adapting activities to allow full participation. As a result, campers garner independence, self-confidence, and encouragement through medically safe recreational activities and social interactions, while parents and siblings receive a break from the rigors of around-the-clock care.
